In 1917, after the death of his wife in the Ukraine, Michael's grandfather brought his family to Kingston, working first at the Davis Tannery and later as a shoemaker in Wellington Street. His son, John W. Stephenson, was a plumber/pipefitter at the Locomotive Works. After a series of losses, Michael's mother raised a large family while running a rooming house on Brock Street, with as many as 17 people in the house at a time.
